What is Website Hosting?

Basically, hosting is required so that a Website can be accessed over the internet. In order for this to happen, a Website is stored on a computer (called a server) which is continually connected to the internet. When you type in the domain name for a Website, information is sent to this server requesting access to the Website.. which is then delivered to your computer through a process called "data transfer".

Can I host my site on my computer?

In order to host a Website on your computer you would need a special computer called a server - this computer consists of hardware normally not included on computers, and has other capabilities far beyond the scope of a standard P.C. Beyond that, you would also need specialized software, the knowledge to use it... Not to mention a good "dedicated" connection to your local phone company. So while it is possible to host your own site, it is not cost effective.

What is Data Transfer?

Data transfer is the amount of information (measured in MegaBytes and GigaBytes) that is shared between a server and a web visitor's computer. Data transfer only occurs when a web page is accessed online. Your hosting server needs to be capable of processing large amounts of data transfer quickly and efficiently.

Can a Website's Design effect the loading time of a Page?

Pages with large file sizes (due to heavy graphics or animations) will take longer to load than smaller sized pages due to the rate of data transfer. Improperly formatted pictures can drastically increase the load time of a page. A good Website design company will attempt to minimize loading time through design techniques such as picture compression.

A Websites loading time is based on 3 figures:
1. The rate of data transfer from the server
2. The data download rate of the P.C.
